The main reason being, the extra weight of the baby which changes the center of gravity of the mother’s body causing back ache. Hormonal changes during the early part of the pregnancy other contributory factors for the back pain. The other characteristics of pregnancy such as loosening ligaments between the pelvic bones and joints in preparation for the birth of the baby and urinary infection also contribute to back pain.

You need to distinguish between back pain and severe back pain in a pregnant woman. If it is severe back pain, it may be a pointer to some other serious types of problems. This requires thorough investigation and treatment.

The cure for back pain during pregnancy lies not in medications but in exercising. Pregnancy and Lower Back Pain: What to Do!

The decisions of picking a name… The anticipation and excitement… Painting the new room… Clothing, Diapers and family celebrations. The joy of a pregnancy is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Unfortunately however, for many women the later months of pregnancy can prove to be quite challenging. One common problem many women face is lower back pain.

Lower back pain can be a horrible interruption in day-to-day activities for a pregnant woman. More importantly, it interferes with their quality of life, not to mention the enjoyment of one of the most memorable times of their life.

The obvious cause of lower back pain is the biomechanical stress being placed on the mother by the added weight of baby. As the baby gains weight the mother is pulled forward. In order to compensate for this forward pull, the mother has to lean her upper body backward. This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the low back and pelvis.

This explanation of low back pain sounds complete. It is a true explanation but is only a small part the problem. The “hidden” cause of lower back pain is actually muscle imbalances. In fact muscle imbalances are a common cause of lower back pain in pregnancy but it is also responsible for back pain in a majority of the population.

The strength and tone of the muscular system is an extremely important factor when assessing a patient with lower back pain. Unfortunately, muscle imbalances are not addressed properly by most health practitioners… but just because they are not trained in identifying and addressing muscle imbalances, it doesn’t mean you have to continue to suffer…

But before I share with you the solution to this problem, let me first explain in more detail what a muscle imbalance is and how it causes back pain and sciatica…

In a nutshell, muscle imbalances work like this. Muscles work together with opposing muscles to allow movement at joints. One muscle stretches while the other shortens. Each side should be of equal tone and strength. When a pregnant woman walks, moves, bends, twists or sleeps she will typically do so in an unbalanced and awkward manner to accommodate for her increased weight. In addition, various everyday activities and positions we put our body in create imbalances in the muscle groups and during pregnancy it only worsens…

Muscle imbalances then pull the pelvis and low back out of alignment and this places uneven and excessive stress on the muscles, bones and joints.

The spine is comprised of 24 moveable bones with a shock-absorbing disc in between each bone. This spinal column rests on three large bones called the pelvic girdle. When this spinal column is in proper alignment it will carry a majority of the weight and stress being placed on the body. When one or more of these 24 bones misaligns, especially the pelvis, the muscles work overtime so to speak. They now have to carry the weight that the spinal column is supposed to handle. At this point the muscles are unbalanced and are very prone to an injury. Lower back pain is the most common expression of this problem.

If the above scenario takes place then the stage has been set for lower back pain and dysfunction. Not only does the soon to be Mom have to deal with safely carrying the baby, she has to now do it with a painful lower back. Let’s face it, the soon to be Mom is going to be in pain and she is not going to enjoy her most cherished time in life.

The Solution

The solution is based on a better understanding of muscle imbalances and how your body works… The first thing you have to do is fully understand what muscle imbalances are, how they are created and how they cause back pain and sciatica…

Once you understand muscle imbalances the next step is to identify the ones you have and understand how they are creating your pain… after you have identified the imbalances is when you can then begin addressing them with the right combination of corrective exercises, stretches and treatments…

Dealing With Back Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time for a woman as she awaits the birth of her child and prepares for a new chapter in her life. But what are implicit with Pregnancy are the many physical changes that the pregnant woman’s body endures as this new life grows inside her. Such changes often result in discomfort – some minimal and some quite acute – including the aches and pains associated with a widening frame and growing belly. Subsequently, back pain during Pregnancy is most common, with nearly 90% of pregnant women reporting discomfort of this kind.

It’s not difficult to understand the causes of back pain during Pregnancy. As the fetus grows, the pregnant woman’s weight inevitably increases and her frame shifts to accommodate the space in which the baby resides. For any person who carries extra weight – and most especially a pregnant woman – back pain is generally part of the consequences. Our spines carry our body weight and when that weight is increased the spine must adjust accordingly. This puts quite a burden on our backs and can result in discomfort; nowhere is this more evident than with back pain during pregnancy.

Further, under normal circumstances, the strength of the abdominal muscles significantly affects the health of back muscles. The abdominal core supports the back, lending it a hand in accommodating the weight of the body. In the case of a pregnant woman, the back is at the mercy of a growing abdomen; posture is impacted and the woman’s center of gravity is compromised. Back pain during pregnancy can also result from growing breasts – another consequence of a changing body.

Another form of back pain during pregnancy includes the experiencing of back labor closer to the woman’s due date – an incredibly uncomfortable occurrence. These labor pains should be monitored closely by your doctor. While some back labor is considered false labor, other pains may be associated with the real thing. So be sure to consult your obstetrician if you are experiencing back labor pains.

Different doctors recommend different things to combat back pain during pregnancy including the use of a “belly belt” that helps support the abdomen and the back; light exercises to help strengthen and stretch the back muscles, body pillows used at night that allow you to sleep on your side with support, and pregnancy massage. The use of medications of any kind is strongly discouraged during pregnancy so it’s best to work within these natural approaches.

Back pain during pregnancy doesn’t have to stop you in your tracks. Approach your health as you would during any other time by consulting your doctor and treating your body well with plenty of rest, good nutrition, and a pain relief program specifically designed for you by your medical professional.

Causes And Remedies Of Back Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a very crucial time period in the life of a woman. It is a joyous period but at the same time it can become a source of worry and uncertainty. Several changes occur in the body of a woman during Pregnancy. Most of these changes have a direct or indirect effect on the spinal cord of the woman, which can later turn in to mild or severe back pain.

Both lumbar and posterior pelvic pain can occur in a woman after Pregnancy. Many people believe back pain is a normal phenomenon during and after pregnancy. Wherein it is not. There are certain factors that cause pain in the back of a woman after delivering the baby. They are:

Weight gain: A woman can gain as much as a quarter of weight in her body during pregnancy. This kind of tremendous weight gain stresses the back of the expecting mother.

Change in the center of gravity: The weight that you have gained during pregnancy is carried in the front and the back portion of your trunk. This development leads to the change in the center of gravity in a pregnant woman.

Imbalance in the muscle: With the change in the center of gravity, there also occurs a muscular imbalance in the body. This imbalance in the body creates strain, especially on the back.

Fatigued Muscles: During pregnancy the muscles tend to fatigue soon. This results in poor postures of the body.

Hormonal surges: The hormones produced during pregnancy can create laxity in the pelvis. This hormone surge coupled with a change in the center of gravity gives rise to a decreased joint support.

Apart from these there are several other activities that can increase your back pain at the time of pregnancy. These activities create a pressure or load on the spine with the pelvis and hips. Some of these activities are walking, running, rolling on the bed, twisting, lifting heavy objects, bending forward and climbing stairs.

So to do away with your back pain problem, you need to follow a conservative management program. This conservative management effort should include appropriate exercises and the use of proper medications. All these efforts will promote and support your proper posture.

Apart from this, it is also important for you to pay regular visits to your physical therapist in case of prolonged and severe pain.

Always remember, back pain is common place during pregnancy but it should not be taken as a necessary part of it. Try to make your pregnancy as pleasant as possible. This will facilitate in easier delivery of the baby. So address your back pain as quickly as possible.
