Back pain is one of the topmost problems world over. It might seem that it is just a minor pain in your back, but it is very much capable of throwing one’s life out of gear. Some of us have physically demanding jobs that involve working in one posture for long hours. And then when most of us reach home, we are just too tired to do anything except take the remote and watch television until it is dinner time. After dinner it is bedtime, and the day ends. That’s the reason why back pain has got to do more with the lifestyle and wrong postures than with anything else.

The commonest back pain is the lower back pain. In most of the cases, if the back pain has not reached chronic state, it can be entirely done away with. What works best is understanding the causes and taking due care so as to give no reason for your lower back to complain.

The people who lift heavy weights regularly are the ones most susceptible to lower back pain. This is due to the very nature of their work. However, this does not mean that there is no way to avoid it. It can very well be avoided if the weight is lifted properly with your legs bearing the major part of the weight. Do not just stoop and lift the weight. Bend your legs and lower your entire body in a squat, hold the object and rise. This way your back would not strain under the load.

Bad posture is another important reason. Those who slouch are very likely to have lower back problems. Therefore, practice standing erect with your shoulders square. When you sit on a couch, avoid sliding down with your neck resting on the back of the couch. You might find it relaxing but this may cause back problem soon enough.

Stress is considered to be one of the major reasons for back pain. Therefore, try to keep yourself as far away from stress as you can and do not deprive your body of sleep, as that, too, may cause back pain.

Finally, keep your diet healthy avoiding junk food and squeeze in regular exercise in your busy schedule. If you follow the tips above, back pain would soon be a part of your personal history.

Pregnancy brings back pain in many cases. So much so that it has been found to affect as many as 50 % of all pregnant women, which is quite a sizeable number. Here are a few tips that can help you have pregnancy free of back pain.

1.Since back pain during pregnancy is the result of changing shape of the body and increased body weight that the spine has to support, it is important that you keep the posture right and use a belt to support the belly. So, no slouching any more.

2.Sometimes urinary infection also causes back pain. So, if the back pain is acute and it is the early stage of pregnancy, you must visit a doctor so that if there is a urinary infection, it could be taken care of at the earliest.

3.One thing that you must avoid as far as you can and littler farther is medication. There is an additional responsibility of the well being of your child on you. Therefore, do not resort to medication unless absolutely necessary and never without consulting a doctor.

4.Exercising has been found to be a great natural remedy for back pain. You are not required to strain yourself. Just perform moderate exercises meant for pregnant women. Consult your doctor in this regard and he or she will be able to help you make a list of exercises that would suit you depending upon the stage of pregnancy. Do not, however, go on for a rigorous exercise regimen because that may do more harm than good.

5.Another thing, you are not supposed to stand for extended periods of time because due to the additional weight you are carrying, it puts extra pressure on your spine and may thus result in back pain. Therefore, avoid working in the kitchen for long hours. If you have to work, keep taking short breaks frequently.

6.High heels have to be shunned at all the costs because they play havoc with the posture and strains the back.

Take good care of yourself and back pain would not come anywhere near you during pregnancy. A child is a great responsibility and you are supposed to shoulder it months before he or she actually steps into the world.

Upper back pain is primarily a result of irritation of muscles and while it is not as common as lower back pain, it can be very painful and restrictive.

Many people are suffering upper back pain caused by work conditions, and poor posture and stress are often the cause.

Here’s a quick test. Next time you are at your computer just pause for a second and take note of your posture. Chances are your shoulders are hunched and you are leaning forward.

Now sit with your back straight. Even better get a chair that allows you to sit comfortably with your back in it. See how different your posture is now?

Try to pay attention to your posture on a regular basis. You’ll be surprised how often you catch yourself in the wrong position, but are able to self-correct and help your back.

You might on occasion find yourself waking up with upper back pain. If it’s a common occurrence, chances are that it’s your pillow that’s at fault.

When you first get a pillow, you head is a couple of inches off the mattress. But over time, the pillow gets flattened, and your head may only be half an inch off the mattress. This shift in position could be what’s making you more susceptible to upper back pain.

Aggressive treatment for upper back pain

A great way to treat upper back pain, especially throbbing upper back pain, is icing. Ice your upper back 3-4 times per day for 10 – 15 minutes, for two days.

Talk with your doctor about anti-inflammatory medicine such as ibuprofen. My experience has been that the doctor will advise a stronger dosage than what’s on the label and that can accelerate your recovery.

Exercises for upper back pain

If your pain is bad and lasts for a few days, go and see your doctor. Chances are that he will start you on exercises for your upper back to help recover from injury. Exercises that are often recommended include the following which should only be done after being advised by your doctor:

1.Standing in the corner of a room, about two feet or so from the wall. Put your hands on the walls at chest height. Then lean in to the corner until your shoulders are level with your hands. You will feel the stretch across your upper back and shoulders. Hold it for 10 to 15 seconds. Don’t lean in past your shoulders though since this can cause injury.

2.Stand or sit up straight. Now pull back your shoulder blades so that it feels that you are trying to touch them. Feel the stretch across your chest and shoulders.

Don’t try and rush your recovery from upper back pain. Follow your doctor or physiotherapist’s advice and you’ll increase your chances of being pain free sooner rather than later.

Back pain treatment is a huge and profitable industry within the healthcare system. Back pain is an epidemic condition which affects the lives of countless souls. Treatment for chronic back pain demonstrates some of the worst curative results in modern medicine and is also perhaps the most unenlightened and misguided of all healthcare specialties.

Back pain is traditionally treated by orthopedists and chiropractors, although many other care providers have gotten in on the action, as well. Rheumatologists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, massage therapists, physical therapists, reiki practitioners, Bowen therapists, Alexander therapy practitioners, herbalists, doctors of traditional Chinese medicine, osteopaths, physiatrists, acupuncturists, pain specialists, fitness trainers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nutritionists, alternative medicine providers, yoga instructors and orthotic makers are among many of the specialists who have profited greatly from the dorsopathic suffering of others.

There is certainly nothing wrong with wanting to help a person cure their pain and there is also nothing wrong with profiting from your good work. However, the back pain industry is paid far too well for a healthcare specialty which seems to rarely score a bullseye when it comes to accurate diagnosis and successful treatment. In fact, most care providers are lucky to even hit the target at all, since many therapy options are ill conceived, poorly executed and not even indicated for the diagnosis, given of course that the diagnosis is correct to begin with…

Statistics for back pain treatment are alarming. Chronic symptoms are reported in back pain patients more than any other type of health complaint. Up to 85% of adults will have moderate to severe back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain is the second most common reason for a person to visit a doctor or emergency room. Back pain is also the primary excuse given for worker absenteeism. Back pain sufferers, whose symptoms do not resolve within 6 months of treatment, have a better chance of agonizing for the rest of their lives, than they have of ever finding a permanent cure. These stats are simply unacceptable, considering the vast amount of care providers and resources available to back pain patients. So what is wrong with the system and more importantly, how can it be fixed?

Back pain is typically viewed as being sourced from a defect, deficiency or injury to the spine or one of its supportive tissues. This is typically called structural or mechanical pain, meaning there is a physical reason for the symptoms relating to an anatomical condition. The Cartesian philosophy embraced by most modern medical providers is the single more damaging influence on back pain treatment statistics. It has been well established by an ever growing number of respected medical research projects, clinical studies and therapy programs, that back pain, or any chronic pain, is far more often the direct result of the complex interactions between the emotional mind and the body. Being that most back pain care givers do not address this basic fact explains why so many treatment options fail miserably. After all, these treatments are trying to cure a physical structural condition, while all along, the pain is either completely psychogenic or psychosomatically worsened or perpetuated.

In order to fix this great injustice and end the seemingly endless suffering of back pain patients the world over, a paradigm shift in care must occur. Doctors must stop blaming purely coincidental and generally asymptomatic structural concerns and start acknowledging the common link between ongoing pain and the emotional mind. In essence, doctors must stop treating the human body like it was some sort of complicated machine and start treating human beings for what they truly are…People who live with the constant and ever-present interactions between body and mind, creating all conditions of health and disease.

Hunching, bending, and slouching are just a couple of bad habits we have acquired over the years. Usually begin in childhood and follow us into adulthood, where the problems tend to arise. Unfortunately, many of us are unaware of these bad habits, which makes most of us likely candidates for back pain. You do not have to have a health condition to have chronic back pain. Not even have to be seniors. Back pain can strike anytime, any age.

The people working behind a desk for life may not realize it, but they are doing much damage to their backs by slouching. As indicated above, people tend to do it unconsciously. Over time, an accumulation of stress and tension is applied, and the damage is done. Other cases in the daily activities that damage when the back is us. Slouching when standing without holding your shoulders down and back in a relaxed fashion can put a lot of stress on the back and neck. Another activity in which damage to the rear is possible is when the dream. A bad mattress can damage the spine of the natural alignment, which can result in back pain. You might also feel pain in the neck and shoulders when sleeping on a bad mattress.

When your back is damaged, you may not feel in the beginning, so they continue to practice the same activities that we always have, without corrections. Pilates exercises and were intended to correct the alignment of the spine. This type of exercise consists of a series of small, efficient, and powerful movements that strengthen the muscles that have been undone in the ebb and flow of daily activities. You will be able to tighten and tone the buttocks, abdominal muscles, back and muscles, increasing your body’s strength.

At some point in most of the lives of people who suffer some form of back discomfort. It is inevitable. We are accustomed to slouching and poor posture habits, and catch up with us. In severe cases, the discs are herniated, and sometimes may develop arthritis. The alignment is crooked, and all bodily functions are put off. Talk about pain! Stiffness, numbness, tingling, and burning are just some of the very real feelings that people live with suffering from back pain. Frequent doctor’s visits are a very common reality for a lot of people too. How to get rushed to the emergency room is also very common in the world of terrible back pain.

Pilates and stretching techniques can help to correct even the worst back problems. Once the force and restore alignment, everything else follows. Ultimately, you are more aware and conscious of their position, and much more knowledge on how to alleviate signs of back pain. Through Pilates, no more drugs, doctor visits, or annoying bouts of pain. Only an effort at self healthy, natural alignment.

The curse of back pain is becoming a more common ailment and although anyone can at some point in time face it, a number of factors can increase the risk of suffering from it. These risks can emerge from a wide variety of factors from activity that is undertaken purposefully to lifestyle habits that you might not have thought would have an effect on the health of your back.

Back pain can become more common with age but this does not mean that you have to accept it as part of becoming older. And it is not just the older generation that is more prone to it as often it is those in their 30’s and 40’s that can suffer greatly. This is much more prevalent among those less physically fit. Where back and abdominal muscles are allowed to become weak they may not properly support the spine. It is common for those who have been inactive all week to consciously undertake exercise in a concentrated period over the weekend. Whilst this has benefits they are unfortunately more likely to suffer painful back injuries than people who make moderate physical activity a daily habit. Studies show that low-impact pilates exercise is good for the discs that cushion the vertebrae, the individual bones that make up the spine.

Many diseases can cause or contribute to back pain. These include various forms of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis, and cancers elsewhere in the body that may spread to the spine. In addition, lifestyle choices such as smoking may not directly be the cause, it increases your risk of developing low back pain and sciatica. As an example, by continuing smoking it may contribute to pain by blocking the body’s ability to naturally deliver nutrients required by the disks of the lower back. As a result of smoking, it is not uncommon for repeated coughing to have a detrimental effect on the muscles around the back leading to pain. And just for good measure, smoking has been found to slow the healing process which will have the effect of prolonging pain as a result of back injuries, back surgery or broken bones. Another lifestyle choice of a diet high in calories and fat, combined with an inactive lifestyle, can lead to obesity, which can put stress on the back.

Another reason for the onset of back pain is from activity which is related to types of work. Having a job that requires heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling, particularly when this involves twisting or vibrating the spine, can lead to injury and back pain. In complete contrast, undertaking an inactive job such as sitting at a desk for long periods of the working day may also lead to or contribute to pain, especially if you have a poor sitting posture that places undue pressure on the spine which can be due to the choice of an inappropriate chair. This can lead to the muscles becoming out of alignment and thus creating unnecessary strain on them.

Nowadays, more and more people are becoming overweight. The main reasons for being overweight are a low energy expenditure and – first and foremost -wrong eating habits. According to the American Obesity Association (AOA) 64.5% of all adult Americans (about 127 million people) are categorized as being overweight or obese. In many other developed countries the figures are similarly alarming. Overweight and obesity are about to turn into a global epidemic. To carry about extra weight with oneself can result in several serious health issues, such as back pain through overweight.

Most people are aware of the more commonly known causes for overweight, such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and colon cancer. The majority of people, however, is not fully conscious of the health risk posed by back pain through overweight. Overweight contributes to different symptoms – the most common symptoms are osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. If you are overweight and suffer from back pain you shouldn’t take your problem lightly. The first instance of back pain can be considered as acute or short-term pain. After about 2 month the complaint is becoming chronic and usually much more difficult to treat than acute pain.

Fortunately, compared to some more complicated causes of back pain, back pain through overweight is easy to identify. Even experienced sports physicians and doctors find it hard to exactly identify some causes of back pain, because the reasons can be of a very complex nature. However, if you are overweight you know the reason for your back pains. Your spine has the function to carry your body’s weight and to balance your body. When your spine is forced to carry a lot of weight, this can lead to structural compromise, poor posture and even severe damages. Back pain through overweight can easily lead to chronic complaints and you should take immediate action in order to get rid of your extra pounds.

The lower back is most susceptible to the effects of overweight. Lower back pain through overweight is caused by problems relating to your lumbar spine. Apart from overweight, back pain is also caused by an insufficient amount of exercises for your back and your pelvis base as well as by a sedentary resulting in a poor flexibility and weak muscles in your lower back. This leads to your lower back being increasingly curved because the pelvis shifts slightly forward. The result is chronic lower back pain, and if you want to solve your problem you have to lose your extra pounds. Back pain through overweight is definitely curable by keeping a healthy and balanced diet.

The most important factor when it comes to weight loss is to permanently integrate some significant changes into your eating habits. If you change some important key factors on a permanent basis you won’t fall into the yo-yo effect trap. Combined with some physical activity you will be able to lose weight once and for all. And by losing weight you will not only get rid of back pain through overweight, but you will also be able to prevent some serious health issues, such as coronary heart disease and colon cancer.

If you are experiencing back pain and it is interfering with your daily life, you may be curious about your cause of back pain. Back pain is a problem that so many people live with and many people have difficulty alleviating it. There are different treatments available, but in order to know how to treat your pain, you need to know the cause of back pain first.

Understanding The Cause Of Back Pain

The cause of back pain for many people is standing or sitting incorrectly. Often stand and sit hunched over. When the bones in your back are properly lined up as you would see in someone standing straight, your back can best support your body. When you are hunched over the weight of your body is displaced unevenly putting pressure on certain parts of your back. Many people sit in front of computers or at desks much of the day and end up hunching over rather than straightening their back. The same goes for people who spend most of the day standing in one spot. If you are like this in your daily life, that may be your cause of back pain.

Another cause of back pain is due to heavy lifting. This is a quick way to injure your back if you aren’t lifting properly. This is why it is best to always keep your back straight when lifting and focus on lifting with your legs rather than your back.

A common cause of back pain that occurs in older individuals is ageing and arthritis. This is unavoidable and may mean that you will need to see your doctor about pain killers.

Talking With Your Doctor

In taking with your doctor you will find that the cause of back pain is damage done to the spinal cord. This can be a very minor injury that causes back pain for a couple days or it could be a more serious injury that requires treatment. So if you correct what you think might be the cause of your back pain and yet the pain continues, make sure that you pay your doctor a visit. You may find that you need surgery or maybe just a prescription for some pain relievers.

There are many possibilities for your cause of back pain. For more information on cause of back pain, pain medications, and other treatments begin searching online. You don’t have to live in pain forever.

Ouch! Your back hurts. You’ll go to a doctor if it doesn’t let up soon, but meanwhile, what can you do to treat back pain? Better yet, since you don’t want to simply treat it, what can you to relieve back pain? Wait a minute. What can you do to cure back pain – now?!

While back pain can be excruciating, it is common. It is one of the leading reasons people visit doctors each year. Add those who don’t want to visit a doctor, and the numbers are staggering.

Question is: how can you truly cure back pain?

You Don’t Want to Hear This!

My own doctor told me last week that the best way to cure back pain is to begin, and consistently maintain, regular exercises to strengthen core muscles.

After telling me that, he gave a short laugh, and added, “But most people don’t want to hear that.”

How about you? If my doctor is right, you probably don’t want to hear that you can cure back pain with regular exercise. You would rather hear that…

* a new chair will cure back pain while you watch TV
* a new prescription drug will cure back pain with daily doses
* a month in bed (paid sick leave) will cure back pain
* you should not exercise at all

I’m sorry, but what you and I really need is exercise that specifically targets the core muscle groups that support our backs.

Exercises to Cure Back Pain

The Texas Back Institute tells us that research shows more than two days of inactivity is harmful when you have back pain. Lying in a bed or reclining chair will only cause your muscles to weaken and become less flexible. As you move around, exercise improves blood flow to discs, joints, and muscles. Exercise relaxes spasms that are causing you pain, and speeds healing.

You need to get up and get gentle exercise if you expect to cure back pain.

The following daily routine will go far toward helping you actually cure back pain and keep it from recurring.

* Morning Rising: Begin your day by getting out of bed with this exercise. Roll on one side. Gently swing your legs to the floor while pushing up with your arms. When you are in a sitting position, stand up. This exercise will remind you every morning of your desire to cure back pain forever.

* Warm-up: Warm up your back before beginning exercises or rushing around getting ready for your day. Bend at the waist, and let your arms hang toward the floor. Do not stretch or bounce. Simply bend and hang, feeling your back lengthen. Then reach slowly for the ceiling, gently stretching upward. A brief, relaxed walk will finish your warm-up.

* Six Exercises:

1. Slippery Heels – Lie on your back on the floor, legs straight. Slowly slide your left heel toward your body, knee bent upward. Then slide the heel back away from your body until your leg is straight again. Repeat 10 times for each leg.

2. Slippery Lap – Stand with your back touching a wall, feet 12″ from the wall. Tighten abdominal muscles, hold, and slowly bend both knees, sliding downward until you form a lap. Hold 30 seconds, and slowly slide up again. Repeat 10 times.

3. High Heels – Stand facing a wall, about 18″ away. Balance your weight evenly on both feet. Slowly lift up only your heels – as though wearing high heel shoes. Then lower your heels slowly back to the floor. Repeat 10 times for each foot.

4. High Legs – Lie on your back, left leg straight, right leg at right angle. Tighten abdominal muscles, and slowly lift straight leg 6 to 12 inches, keeping it straight. Hold 5 seconds, and slowly lower. Repeat 10 times for each leg.

5. Reverse High Legs – Do “high legs” while lying on your stomach on the floor. Hold for 10 seconds, and slowly lower the leg to the floor. Repeat 5 times for each leg.

6. Brake Pedals – Lie on your back on the floor, legs straight. Push toes away as though pushing on 2 brake pedals. Pull the toes back toward your body, as though letting up on the brake pedals. Work your brake pedals up and down. Repeat 10 times.

* Cool-down: Cool down before going on with your day. A brief, relaxed walk is all you need.

Additional Secrets to Cure Back Pain

You can cure back pain by adding these additional secrets to your exercise program. First of all, remember that you should see your health care provider to learn exactly what type of back pain you have, and whether home care is sufficient.

With your physician’s approval, add these steps to cure back pain.

* If you must sit at a computer all day, sit with feet flat on the floor, or use a footrest to relieve back strain and cure back pain.

* Get up and move around for at least 5 minutes out of every hour.

* When standing for extended periods, shift your weight regularly.

* Wear shoes that have soft soles and low heels, preferably no more than 1.5 inches and square in shape. Place inserts in your shoes to correct any incorrect posture.

* Lose weight if you are too heavy. You can cure back pain more quickly if your muscles have less work to do.

* Avoid sitting on a thick billfold. A lot of money might buy back surgery, but you won’t cure back pain by sitting on it or a stack of credit cards and photos.

* Bend at the knees, not at the waist, when lifting something heavy.

* When your doctor says you are ready, begin a program of aerobic exercise to strengthen those core muscles in your back and abdomen. Choose from activities such as jogging, cycling, or swimming.

Cure Back Pain with Mind over Matter

Recent research indicates that mental gymnastics can do much to cure back pain. Although my doctor may not want to hear this, it appears to be true. Published in the journal BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, the study found that training the mind was just as effective as using more physical methods to deal with chronic lower back pain.

The secret is to consciously realize that pain does not necessarily mean harm. Learn about your pain and what causes it, allowing your brain to deal with the perceived pain.

As long as you try to avoid it, you cannot cure back pain. Talk to your physician and create an exercise program that is right for you and your pain.

When back pain occurs, the process of consideration must start. Back pain can emerge from various causes, yet when the pain is severe, one should seek medical advice immediately. When injuries occur and the back delivers messages that signal us that a problem exists, one must also seek medical advice. Injuries often cause neurological conditions.

When to visit your doctor.
If you are in an accident or fall and cause injury, seek medical assistance instantly. Delaying the problem can lead to further complications. If you lift a heavy object and your back starts to ache, seek help. If the muscles in your legs cannot provide you support and stability to stand erect on your toes, seek help.

If slapping of your feet start when you begin walking, you will need medical support also. At the lower trunk, legs, and back, if you feel weakness, tingling, or numbness you will need medical assistance. During sleep hours if your back gives you problems, you endure fevers, and if you experience chills, seek help. If you loose control of your bladder and bowels, medical treatment is needed.

If you notice pain traveling down your arm or leg, in addition to back pain, seek help. If you notice joint pain or swelling in all areas, including the back seek help. If you have back pain and perform home treatment, such as bed rest and taking over-the-counter meds, seek help.

If you feel pain in the back, which you believe is not an emergency; you should rest your back. When pain starts from common activates, it is often because you have over-exerted the joints, muscles, etc. When treating the problem at home, rest in a comfortable position. Lie on your back and place a pillow under your knees. You can also try resting on your back while placing your feet on your couch or chair. The knees should bend at a 90-degree angle. Roll a towel up and situated it so that it supports your neck.

Whatever method you choose and if it is right for you, allow your back to rest until the pain vanishes. If the pain continues however, seek medical assistance. Sometimes you have to rest the back a few days before it ceases aching. Ultimately, you can visit a massage therapist, chiropractor, or someone who performs acupuncture to seek help.

In fact, many doctors and mental health experts are incorporated acupuncture into their treatment plans. The process includes needles, which treats the disorder by inserting the injections into the skin at points believed to cause the pain. Acupuncture originated in China, which blocked flow of energy is believed to create pain.

When you rest the back, make sure that you lay on a firm surface, especially if you are resting for a day or so. If you lie on soft mattresses for a length of time, it could cause problems to the muscles that support the back. During the wake hours, you want to continue lying on your back, rather than sitting up to read a book. You can continue the treatment at home by moving around every couple of hours. You want to focus on balancing the body when walking around and use hard surfaces to support your weight.

When you lie back down to rest, make sure you move gradually in position. If you have a back mattress at home, lie on the mattress and allow the heat and vibration motions comfort your aching back.

How to lie in bed properly.
Whichever side your pain is, sit on the edge of your bed and lower the head, so that it balances with your trunk. Raise the legs and slowly turn over onto your back. Use your arms to erect from bed rest.
