Are you seeking treatment for back and neck pain? Are you weighed down by headaches or migraines? Are you still bothered by a pinched nerve, or a sports injury that just won’t heal? This article’s intention is to offer you an introduction to chiropractic care and provide you with guidelines for choosing a Sydney North Shore Chiropractor.

Chiropractic treatment is a form of physical therapy concerned with the functioning of your spine and central nervous system. Chiropractors provide their clients with the foundation to stay healthy by utilizing the power of their own bodies to promote natural healing in an efficient manner.

This physical therapy explores the connections between the anatomy of your spine and its effects on your health. The health problems that arise as a result of misalignments of the vertebrae in your spine can be effectively treated by a chiropractor.

Numerous North Shore Chiropractic clinics exist in the North Sydney, Neutral Bay and Cremorne areas. If you are contemplating chiropractic treatment, these are some questions you need to ask them:

1. Will your Australian Health Fund reimburse some of your money, and if so, how much of it?

2. Have they dealt with issues similar to yours before?

3. What is the price of each session?

4. Do they have discounts if you purchase multiple sessions?

5. Do they aim to treat the root of your problem and put you on the path to greater energy and wellness?

The last point is very important. In addition to adjusting your spine and alleviating your neck or back pain, their job is to guide you toward total wellness.

The following guidelines should assist you on your journey to better health:

1. Make regular visits to your chiro so as to aid your spine and nervous system to function at their best and assist in building good health;

2. Consume those foods which will help your body to work in the best way it can by providing it ample the nutrients;

3. You must drink plenty of water; it flushes your system of toxins and keeps you hydrated;

4. Regular exercise will improve both your health and your energy;

5. Make sure you get plenty of rest so your body can recuperate and build up more energy;

6. Keep a positive mental attitude;

7. Learn about other ways to enhance your health.

A professional chiro should educate you along in the process so that you understand the basis of what they are doing. Chiropractic treatment is no immediate cure. A few sessions may be required to resolve your sports injury and additional care may be needed to maintain and build on your progress. Your emotional, physical and chemical aspects should be examined, in order to truly improve your overall wellbeing.

Before bringing your children to your health professional for a spinal adjustment, you need to ensure that they are comfortable working with children.

Taking over the counter drugs (OTC) is usually the first step in trying to get rid of those little nagging aches and pains we all suffer from during the normal course of our daily life.

Most of the time these non-prescribed drugs work just fine. However, it’s when the little aches and pains become a persistent chronic pain that we run into problems.

That nagging, chronic backache can become a debilitating problem. Those Irritating little headaches that keep you in a constant bad mood can take on monumental proportion and make your life an absolute hell.

The search for headache pain relief can be all consuming. This is when the cheap OTC drugs you buy at the discount stores become ineffective.

Hopefully, you are smart enough to realize that doubling up the dosage is not a good idea. Your first step should be is to consult your doctor if the OTC drugs are not doing the job. A chronic headache or chronic back pain is something you can’t ignore.

You should not delay about seeing your doctor if your problem is persistent headaches. Ask about getting an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) procedure done on your head.

It’s painless and a very good way to spot a growing cerebral aneurysm forming in your head. This is a fairly new technique for spotting this sort of problem and is gaining popularity with the doctors.

The MRI is also a great tool being used to spot a ruptured disc in the spine. The MRI is a non-invasive way to look inside of you to see what is going on. If you have any luck at all your test will come back negative.

Usually, the first thing a doctor will try, after passing the MRI test, is physical therapy, and/or some mild prescription drugs. The cause of your chronic pain can be anything from a pinched nerve to a strained muscle. The physical therapy, while expensive, may just be the cure you’re looking for to get rid of your problems.

However, you may have to start taking a regime of prescribed drugs if the workouts do not take care of your never-ending pain. This is where the dangers start to pile up.

Every prescribed drug has an adverse drug reaction. These reactions can affect your liver, stomach, kidneys, and even your heart. You must discuss the possibilities of this problem with your doctor.

An alternative to the prescribed drugs is herbal, or natural pain relief medications. These are pills, ointments, and spray-ons that are manufactured from plants and other natural elements of the earth.

Although new, they don’t have the adverse side effects as conventional medicine and appear to be moving up into first place as the preferred way to get pain relief.

Everyone at some point in their lives will experience chest pain and some times its severe chest pain. Your chest covers a large part of your body and there is alot of territory there, so to speak. It also contains most of your bodies vital organs. These vital organs in your chest, are protected by your rib cage, because they are soft and delicate and can be damaged easily. So it is only natural to become alarmed at the onset of chest pain.

Chest pain is one of the most common reasons people seek emergency help at a hospital. The majority of these people seeking emergency help are concerned that they may be having a hear attack. While mild, to extreme chest pain, is one of the common symptoms of a heart attack, there are many other common reasons that can be atrributed to chest pain, even extreme chest pain can. Even a minor injury to the some parts of your body can leave you stricken with extreme chest pain.

This does not mean that you shouldn’t be concerned if you are stricken with serious chest pain and that you shouldn’t seek medical attention. It just means that you don’t have to assume you are going to die if it happens to you. Quit often, chest pain seems to come on suddenly and this in itself can be alarming but how sudden chest pain appears can have little bearing on how serious it is.

A strained back, that leads to swelling around the nerves in the back, causing a pinched nerve, can cause some of the most severe chest pain and it can come on suddenly and also may manifest itself in the center of the chest. This is because an irritated nerve can send a pain signal to other parts of your body and many times does. a bruised or cracked rib, can leave you buckled over with chest pain, that can make it difficult to breath.

These are both chest pain situations that are not indicators of a problem with any of your vital organs. Both of these can be cured with a visit to your doctor and some bed rest. However, chest pain can be a warning sign of more serious problems with the vital organs contained in your chest. Chest pain can be one of the symptoms of a heart attack and you may have other symptoms along with it if it is.

These may include, sweating, dizziness and vomiting. Other symptoms may be pain in you jaw or left arm. You also may experience shortness of breath. Restricted blood flow to the heart, may cause chest pain which may be a symptom of heart disease but not a heart attack. There are several heart related problems that can lead to chest pain, while not causing a heart attack.

One of these is a viral infection of the tissue surrounding the heart and another is any of several issues with the arteries that connect to the heart. Stomach problems, such as heartburn or indigestion can cause severe chest pain also. Prolonged mental stress and or anxiety, can cause chest pain. Chest pain can also be an indicator of serious life threatening health problems that don’t involve your heart at all.

Your chest also contains and protects your lungs and any one of many problems involving your lungs can cause extreme chest pain. Any infection of the lungs, can cause severe chest pain. Even pneumonia, or even a severe chest cold, or the flu can often cause chest pain. Chest pain is also one of the symptoms of lung cancer. There are other vital organs that your chest also contains, that will cause chest pain, if they are diseased, or malfunctioning.

Your gal bladder and also your pancreas, are both contained in your chest and any one of a number of problems with these two organs, will lead to chest pain. Chest pain can be a symptom of gall stones, which is a very painful condition. So if you experience severe chest pain, you should always seek immediate medical help, but don’t try to diagnose yourself because the causes are many.

Andre Kirk Agassi has been one of the greatest professional tennis players in history. With a rollercoaster career he had shown to all the tennis world followers what it means to love the sport. For a total of 101 weeks he got to be the No.1 in the World rankings.

Taught by his father, Mike Agassi, Andre started playing at a very young age. At his short 16 he started his professional career and won his first top-level singles title at Itaparica on 1987.

No one ever reached a top-level as fast as Agassi did: in 1988 he won 6 tournaments and by the end of that same year he had earned more than $2 million in prize money, with only 43 tournaments played.

On those first years his image gave a lot to talk about, his long blond scruffy hair and his untraditional for a tennis player attitude and looks started to turn him into a showman and caught the people’s attention.

In 1990, the 20 year-old Andre got in to the French Open where he put the press upside down with his rebel outlook; in fact he named for the press, his fluorescent lycra, shirt and headband costume, the “Lycra, hot lava look”.

The president of the French and the International Tennis federations back in to those days, Philippe Chatrier, appreciated tradition and soon criticized Agassi’s unorthodox clothing, to what Agassi respond: “These bozos will look for anything to talk about. You should see my next outfit, if you think this one’s wild… I think you should have freedom to express what you feel. Wearing colors is what tennis needs. Without colors I’d still be me but I’d be more boring.”

During these years his rebelliousness against the All England Club’s rules about color clothing, kept him out of the Wimbledon Tournament. For three years he insisted that he didn’t possessed any suitable attire for the championships, in other words nothing in white color _ the request to all players is to wear only white cloth.

At his 21 he realized that while he was wasting his time with the press, his comrades Sampras, Chang and Courier were passing ahead him taking all the honors away, and leaving him on the back of the row. Therefore he accepted Wimbledon’s rules and went to the tournament that same year.

The acceptance to the regulations of the Centre Court gave Agassi his first Grand Slam, after he defeated Goran Ivanisevic in a tight five set final, in his second participation in the Wimbledon Open.

Agassi used a baseline style of play, thanks to his short backswing and excellent hand-eye coordination, he could made contact with the ball ‘inside’ the baseline _something really hard to do even for professional players.In fact John McEnroy among others called Andre the best service returner ever to play tennis; Brad Gilbert (coach) also said he was the best ball striker in the history of tennis.

Getting more focus Agassi started to care more about his healthiness and with that advantage began to use a new strategy that consisted on wear down his opponents, making them run too much. For this reason his opponents gave him the nickname “The Punisher”.

After a wrist surgery in 1993, he came back feeling and playing better than ever. As a result won his second Grand Slam at the US Open in 1994, after beaten Michael Chang in the quarterfinal and Michael Stich in the final.

Andre also founded during this time the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation created to provide recreational and educational opportunities for at-risk children in Southern Nevada; “I have been very blessed and had many opportunities available to me” said Agassi.

Next year Andre played against Pete Sampras in the Australian Open final, capturing is first triumph on this tournament after a great four set final. That year was probably the best one in his career; he won 72 matches and just lost 10 and for the first time and for 30 weeks in a row got to be World No. 1 in the ranking. In 1996 ‘The Punisher’ got the gold medal in the Atlanta Olympics after beating the Spain Sergi Bruguera in straight sets in the final.

However 1997 wasn’t going to be a good year. Agassi’s love for tennis was apparently being killed by Hollywood’s bad publicity. His turbulent relationship and marriage with the actress Brooke Shields, was keeping him away from his career. In November that year his ranking felt down to the World No.141 position and during the entire year didn’t won any top-level titles.

During 1998 he began to worry more about his performance and physical condition in the sport competitions. He participated in several events, always trying to get back in the track. By the end of the year he proved what an excellent and dedicated sportsman he turned into. Winning 5 titles in 10 finals and jumping on the rankings from the World No. 141 at the start of the year, to the No. 6 at the end of it; making it the highest leap to the top 10 ever made in history.

In 1999 got divorced after the 2-years-marriage with Shields. One down for love, but great things for his tennis career came along. Agassi beat Andrei Medvedev in a five-set French Open final, this way becoming the fifth man to won the four Grand Slams singles titles. As prove to his adaptability, Andre is also the only one of the quintet who won the four titles in four different surfaces. Plus he reached the final at the Wimbledon Open, where he lost to Sampras and later a second Us Open trophy gave the perfect finale to a World No. 1 Andre Agassi’s year.

Keeping a right patch 2000 and 2001 gave him two more Australian Open titles. In addition, during these two years Agassi awarded us with some of his best matches:

2000: what many people regard as one of the best matches ever seen at Wimbledon was the final against Patrick Rafter.
2001: at the Us Open quarterfinals played against his compatriot, Sampras although Andre lost it is considered to be one of tournament’s all-time greatest matches.

On October 22, 2001 Andre got married for the second time, with former tennis player Steffi Graf, who dated before his divorce Brooke Shields was over.

In 2002 one more time Agassi took part on the US Open final, alongside with his ‘archienemy’ Pete Sampras. On this match, that end up being their last duel, Sampras defeated “The Punisher”; after it, Pete stopped participating in competitions and in 2003 he officially retired. Meanwhile Andre’s victories at the Miami, the Rome and the Madrid Masters, helped him finish the year as the oldest year-end No. 2 at 32 years and 8 months.

On May 11, 2003 regained the top position in the world rankings, being the oldest player to hold that spot. His eighth Grand Slam arrived that year, in company with 2 ATP Tour titles and an ATP Master Series victory.

With 34 years, won his 17th ATP Masters Series title, the Cincinnati Masters; he won in 7of the nine Masters Series, missing only Hamburg and Monte Carlo. In 2005 he reached his current record of 60 titles, the last one in the ATP Tour in Los Angeles.

During the French Open in 2005 he lost against Jarkko Nieminen for a pain related to a pinched sciatic nerve. He kept playing in several events, but a persistent back injury continued troubling and at Wimbledon when he lost after the three rough sets with Rafael Nadal the media started to speculate about his retirement.

Agassi had a difficult start this year. He was still in recover from his back-leg and ankle pains. After all the suspense, he finally announced this year, on June 24, that the 2006 US Open was going to be his last tournament.

To play this week Agassi needed cortisone and anti-inflammatory injections for the pain, “I take pride in the striving” said Agassi about his situation and his decision to play until the end.

All his fans were wondering on Sunday if he was going to be able to fight back well against the 25-year-old Benjamin Backer. Since despite all the pain he was having and the extra-effort he was making, he made it through before, in his first two matches against Andrei Pavel and Marcos Baghdatis.

As we all know by now our dearest Andre couldn’t make it, although he pushed himself to the limit. Agassi was beaten on Sunday by the German, who was defeated the very next day by Andy Roddick.

By the end of the match we saw an Agassi with eyes full of tears as the crowd stand up and applaud him for around four minutes. Among the crowd his wife and kids showed him their support. Also joining the people in the ovation was Becker, who said later to the press: “He was my idol growing up”, as he gave his opinion about Agassi.

No one really cared about the scoreboard; ‘The Punisher’ gave more than what he was expected to give. He said to his fans in the field: “The scoreboard said I lost today… But what the scoreboard doesn’t say is what is I’ve found…”

I can say for all of his fans as well as for me that we are going to remember Andre Agassi forever, especially for those like me who grew up watching him ascend into the top positions.

His image, the desire of success and the effort, everything he gave us, was and is until today, somehow, inspiring. Even on his first rebel years he fought for what he believed in, when he felt he did all he needed to do to place back in the top, and there’s where lays the difference between greatness and mediocrity.

So, farewell Andre and thank you for everything you gave us in these wonderful 20 years!

Chronic pain affects between 75 and 90 million Americans every year, and will disable more people than cancer and heart disease combined. Texas is certainly no exception to this. Prospering pain management clinics in every major city in the state, from Houston, to Austin, to Dallas reflect this reality. Though chronic pain can be induced by a variety of situations, the majority of sufferers have back, hip and/or shoulder pain.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, work-related injuries, neurological disorders, joint disease, migraines, and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, are just a few examples of conditions causing chronic pain. Particularly with the proper health insurance coverage, most painful conditions can be effectively treated and, if not cured, at least managed.

Pain is not always a negative experience. In fact, in many instances, it keeps us alive, or at least prevents us from injuring ourselves further. Think of the pain experienced when spraining an ankle, for instance — that pain notifies the wounded person to stop what he or she is doing before further injury is sustained.

But acute pain is quite different from chronic pain. Acute pain occurs on a temporary basis, such as when spraining an ankle, or even when breaking a bone. Pain is considered chronic when it has occurred either continually, or intermittently, over a period longer than six months. Conditions of chronic pain can lead to anxiety, fear, depression, lack of activity, and unemployment. The management of chronic pain, then, is one of the most pressing health issues today throughout Texas and the rest of the United States.

While treating the psychological aspects of this condition is certainly just as important, and may, in fact contribute to, or cause pain, the following will focus on the more common physical treatments for the most widespread chronic pain — that associated with the back, hip, and shoulders. In many instances, health insurance policies will cover certain treatments. Much of the information has been adapted from Prescriptions for Natural Healing by James F. Balch, M.D., and Phyllis A Balch, C.N.C. As always, consult a qualified health practitioner before undergoing any treatment.

(1) Chiropractic Care

Spinal manipulation is considered a “proven treatment” for lower back pain by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Though chiropractic care is effective for many conditions, treating disorders of the back and spine is, by far, the most common reason for seeking out such a practitioner.

Chiropractors focus on the spinal cord itself, believing that, if the spinal cord is able to relay unadulterated signals to the brain and other organs, then healthy function can be maintained throughout the body. Through careful adjustment of misplaced vertebrae, the spinal cord can regain its usual impulse signaling. This enables the body to restore normal nerve function — reducing or eliminating pain, and heal itself of other ailments.

(2) Exercise

While obviously not appropriate for all chronic pain patients, exercise can be a critical part of treating painful conditions. By flexing, strengthening, and otherwise just moving the affected area, circulation increases, muscles are strengthened, and joints are made more limber. Exercise is also known to increase the immune system and reduce anxiety and stress — unhealthy levels of which often contribute to the pain itself. Specific exercises may be prescribed, much like, or as a part of, physical therapy.

(3) Medications

The most common form of medication prescribed for chronic pain patients is morphine. This may be taken orally, or certain forms of morphine-like medicines may be injected at the site. Steroid shots, too, may be used with limited results, though possible long- term damage associated with repeated treatments raises questions over safety.

Several over-the-counter medications are available, including acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), acetaminophen (more commonly known as Tylenol), and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), ibuprofen being the most common. Aspirin and NSAIDs act as anti-inflammatories and pain relievers, and acetaminophen acts as a pain reliever and fever reducer. They do not manage the same levels of pain as morphine, however.

(4) Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can be either active or passive, and utilizes a series of specialized exercises and/or body work techniques designed to help the body recover and regain function after some sort of trauma. While it may certainly provide at least some relief in later stages, all forms of physical therapy tend to be most effective in the first twelve weeks after sustaining an injury. While, at such an early stage, it is still unknown whether pain will develop into a chronic situation, proper recover is critical in determining the final outcome of any type of damage sustained by the body.

Physical therapists undergo years of specialized training, including intensive course work in anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. The discipline has experienced many advances over the last few decades, and treatments are tailored to each individual, depending on the type of trauma sustained, level of current functioning, desired level of functioning, and physical limitations, among others. Massage therapy is also considered a form of physical therapy.

(5) Surgery

In severe cases, and when everything else has been tried, surgery may be necessary. While frightening for many, surgery can provide much-needed relief, particularly for those with herniated discs or pinched nerves. A physician can run specific tests to see if surgery is an option.

If considering surgery, make sure to do as much research as possible on your condition, ask as many questions as you need to, and choose your physician carefully. Surgery on, or near, the spinal cord is a delicate operation, and should be performed by those with years of experience and strong expertise.

Chronic pain is a health issue warranting considerable attention in the United States. Millions suffer from it every year, countless hours are missed from work nationwide, and the psychological repercussions are almost immeasurable. The majority of cases are due to back, hip, and/or shoulder pain. Through proper treatment, however, these conditions can be managed and, in some cases, even cured. The key is in careful research, and conscious decision-making.
