I have been totally surprised by the misinformation which has been spread after the passage of the new tort reform law. Since the law was passed by Missouri lawmakers in 2005, I have had numerous calls from injured workers who have been told that “work comp” doesn’t pay on carpal tunnel cases anymore. This simply isn’t true! There have been changes in the law and the bar has been raised, but carpal tunnel and other repetitive motion claims are still alive and well, despite what you may have heard. At one time, the law was more lax and a case was compensable if work simply “triggered” an injury .The bar was then raised so that a worker had to prove that work was a “substantial factor” in producing an injury. The standard now is that the injured worker must show that work was “the prevailing” or the “dominant factor” in producing an injury. While this is a more difficult standard, it is an exaggeration, or a misrepresentation, for your employer or an insurance adjuster to tell you that “workman’s comp” doesn’t provide compensation for “repetitive trauma injuries” anymore. This is also true of other repetitive trauma claims like “epicondylitis” (tennis elbow), “De Quervains Syndrome”, “tendonitis”, “ulnar nerve entrapment”, “cubital tunnel” ,”rotator cuff ” injuries, “shoulder impingement” syndrome “reflex sympathetic dystrophy”, “herniated disc” injuries and a host of other others. In conclusion, please spread the word that to your fellow workers so that they are not mislead. When in doubt, contact an experienced Missouri “work comp lawyer”.

I get tired of reading in body building forums about Isometric training and how they, these “internet experts” believe it doesn’t work. They never offer up an facts or proof, just their opinion. Which they proudly pronounce it as if it were GOD’s word!

Well folks, here are the facts read em and weep OR get excited!

I would like you to take a moment to read this entire article, this is not some rehash of the same subject. In this article I will break it down for you and give you all the facts.

Here’s a short snip from an article published by NASA-

Isometric Training In Space

“Strength training, says Fitts, involves two different types of resistance exercises: high-intensity isotonics, which shortens and lengthens muscles (for example, lifting and lowering a dumbbell), and isometrics, which fully contracts muscles without movement (for example, pushing against a doorway). Both types of exercise could potentially reduce muscle atrophy in microgravity. Fitts’ experiments with rats, however, suggest that isometrics may protect slow fibers better than isotonics because slow fibers develop very little force during relatively fast isotonic motions.”

Hmm, sounds to me as the boys in space are using what workds to build strength.

Isometric Training On Earth

Oh wait here’s another one for the ladies, just in case you thought Isometric training was just for men. This a small part of an interview with Jane Seymour the actress regarding how she stays in incredible shape.

“Lifetime: What is your exercise of choice these days?

Seymour: Isometrics. I used to throw my back out often. A couple of years ago, it got so bad that I couldn’t move. It turned out I had a herniated disc. That’s the kind of injury you expect to see in a linebacker in the Super Bowl, not in a woman who weighs 115 pounds.

I had to have surgery. My doctor recommended isometrics to help my recovery, so I’ve been doing it for two years.” With isometrics, you have to focus on your body’s alignment and engaging the muscles. I get more out of isometrics than crunches.

It has given me really strong stomach muscles, and I have a longer, leaner look than before. I really wasn’t concentrating on looking good with isometrics that was just a by-product. The main thing is that it has helped with my back pain. I don’t need a chiropractor or a masseuse.”

I guess Isometric training is being used for rehabilitation. But, then what do doctors know!

In Part 2 I will reveal what Olympic Teams thru out the world think about Isometric Training

What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a medical condition where the spinal canal becomes narrow. This narrowing can put additional pressure and compression on the spinal cord and can cause a pinching of the nerve roots. If the narrowing is in the lower part of spinal cord it is referred to as lumbar spinal stenosis and if the narrowing is in the upper part of the spinal cord then it is referred to as cervical spinal stenosis. While stenosis can also occur in the thoracic or upper back region, the lumbar and cervical areas are the most common.

Who Can Get Spinal Stenosis?

Although some people are born with spinal stenosis, the condition is usually seen in people over the age of 50 who already have some disc degeneration. Often, spinal stenosis results from the wearing down on the spine from normal activities. As we get older, our spinal ligaments can calcify, bone spurs may form, and we can get herniated or ruptured discs. All these conditions can lead to a narrowing of the spinal canal which can compress and pinch the spinal nerves.

Spinal Stenosis Symptoms

Symptoms of spinal stenosis can include back pain radiating to the legs, numbness or pain in the buttocks that worsen when walking or exercising, leg weakness, decreased physical endurance, loss of balance, and leg and neck pain.

Treating Spinal Stenosis

In general doctors tend to take a conservative approach when initially treating spinal stenosis. Drug therapy such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling are usually prescribed first, along with bed rest and reduced physical activity. Steroid injections can also be use to help reduce swelling although the pain relief is normally temporary. Traction and spinal decompression may be prescribed, along with physical therapy which can be used to help increase flexibility as well as build endurance.

If the pain is acute, then surgery may be needed in order to widen the spinal canal and to correct the conditions that are contributing to the nerve compression. Some of the surgical procedures used to treat spinal stenosis are:

Decompressive laminectomy. This is used for treating lumbar spinal stenosis and involves removing the top of the vertebra to create more space for the nerves.

Laminotomy. This is a partial removal of the lamina which can be done to widen the spinal canal and relieve compression on the nerve roots.

Foraminotomy. Removal of bone, scar tissue, or other obstructions that are compressing the nerve root exiting the spinal canal.

Due to the risks involved, many doctors will resort to surgical treatments only after non-surgical treatments have been tried first.

This article is not meant to replace the sound advice of a personal physician. Patients should discuss with their doctor all their treatment options before taking any medical course of action.

1. Ask how they think they would feel if a truck hit them.

9. Show them the MRI that shows your herniated disc.

10. Let them feel your muscle spasms.

Here are ten useful tips of advice from a truck accident lawyer to follow if you have been in an accident. You can also learn more about how to handle a truck accident in Chino Hills, or any city, by calling the Law Offices of R. Sebastian Gibson at any of the numbers which can be found on our website at http://www.SebastianGibsonLaw.com and learning how we can assist you.

Obviously, if you have had an accident, and you are reading all of this advice, it’s probably been at least a few days since the accident. However, if it’s only been a few hours or if you ever have another accident, here’s what you should do the next time from the start.

First, take a look around and determine if you or anyone, are hurt. If so, taking steps like trying to prevent further injury or loss of blood are the most important thing you can do. Even if some other driver caused you to be injured, it’s just good manners to help the other driver if they are hurt. They may even be so thankful that they admit their fault to you. The worst thing you can do is get angry or start a fight.

Second, make sure everyone is safe from being injured further. If you are in the middle of traffic, and you are dizzy, sit down away from traffic. If your vehicle is a traffic hazard and you have accident warning devices like flares or triangles, put them out on the road to warn other drivers and get away from the car. Let the police an other emergency personnel investigate the scene with the vehicles in place and move them more safely at a later point.

Third, call the police. Accident reports are extremely helpful if the police will do such a report. Let the police know you are injured immediately. Answer the police questions honestly. But if you are dazed or confused, let them know you need medical treatment and answer only what you feel sure about. Remember, your statements can and will be used against you if you admit fault, and it will be too late and too fishy to later say you didn’t know what you were saying at the scene. Police know that your best recollection is immediately after an accident.

Fourth, get the other driver’s information including their names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, make and model of their vehicles, license plate numbers, and their insurance company name and policy number. If there are witnesses, get their names, addresses and telephone numbers as well. If the other driver makes any admissions of fault, write those down as well.

Fifth, if you have a camera on your cell phone or in the car and you aren’t too injured, take some photos of the vehicles and the scene. If you can’t do it right away, do it after you are released from the hospital.

Sixth, if you are hurt, obtain medical treatment. Don’t decline the ambulance or hospital examination to save your insurance company money or to be stoic. Take your valuables out of your car if you can and get checked out at the hospital. If you are not hurt, don’t get treatment you don’t need. However, remember, after an accident, you may feel a rush of adrenaline that causes you to only start feeling symptoms of pain a few hours later. If you have a health plan that requires you to obtain permission first, call them and find out where you are allowed to seek treatment.

Seventh, call a good truck accident lawyer as soon as you have had your initial treatment, so the attorney can gather other important evidence and prevent the insurance company from taking advantage of you and obtaining such things as recorded statements that you feel fine, when many of your symptoms have yet to manifest themselves. A good truck accident lawyer can save you from making a great deal of mistakes and can shoulder much of the hassle of knowing what to do about car repairs, car rentals, medical treatment, witness statements and the like. If you think you will save money by not having an attorney, think again. A good truck accident lawyer can almost always obtain much higher settlements, obtain reductions of medical bills and insurance liens and prevent you from making costly mistakes. Also, most truck accident attorneys advance costs of obtaining police reports, medical records and the like and are paid and reimbursed for these costs only out of any settlement.

Eight, you will need to report the accident to your insurance company, but since they will want to take a recorded statement from you, just like any other driver’s insurance company, it’s good advice to retain an attorney first. And if the other driver did not have insurance, remember that it is your own insurance company that will be your adversary. You will also need to report the accident to the Department of Motor Vehicles and your lawyer can give you the form for this.

Ninth, do not agree to settle your claim privately with the person at fault for the accident. This almost never works out to your advantage. Don’t agree not to call the police. Police reports that determine the fault for an accident are golden. Your agreement to not involve the police only affords an opportunity for the other driver to change his story and blame you when the police will no longer investigate the accident.

Tenth, don’t pay a traffic ticket without a fight if you weren’t at fault or agree to accept a small payment for your vehicle repairs without knowing that the amount will in fact cover the cost of all the repairs.

If you’ve had a truck accident in Chino Hills, Orange County, Newport Beach, Anaheim, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, Santa Ana, Orange, Fullerton, Costa Mesa, Westminster, Buena Park, Mission Viejo, Garden Grove, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente, or anywhere in Southern California, we have the knowledge and resources to be your Chino Hills Truck Accident Lawyer and your Orange County Truck Accident Attorney.
Four out of every five adult Americans will experience lower back pain at one time in their lives. Sometimes it’s a mild strain or sprain that goes away after a couple of days. Other times, lower back pain lasts for weeks or months.

Ironically, a simple muscle spasm can cause more pain than a herniated disk. In fact, despite the fear of herniated disks, they are the cause of only four percent of back pain cases in the USA each year.
Looking at the causes of lower back pain

1. Muscle strains from activities including heavy lifting, sports activities, whiplash from a car accident, or twisting.

2. Herniated disk (slipped dieck) resulting in the disk pressing a spinal nerve.

3. Spondylosis, also known as spinal osteoarthritis, is a degenerative disease often found in the elderly. Osteoarthritis results from the breakdown of cartilage in the facet bones of the spine. With no cartilage, stiffness and occurs.

4. Spinal stenosis which is the narrowing of an area of the spine. If a nerve is affected by the narrowing, then pain may occur. Spinal stenosis can ofthen be brought on when walking. Regardless of the symptom, the best plan is to avoid the activity that rings on the pain.

Treating lower back pain

1. Lower back muscle strains: Get ice on the back as soon as possible. Ice your lower back 5 – 6 times per day for 10 -1 5 minutes. Do this for the first 48 hours. If you are not feeling any better, go and see your physician, but usually for a strain, the pain will begin to subside albeit possibly slowly.

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine such as ibuprofen is often recommended by doctors. Call your advice nurse or go and visit your doctor to see what dosage should be taken.

2. Herniated discs: most people recover from herniated discs within a couple of months. At first your doctor will likely treat a herniated disc similarly to a muscle strain in that icing and anti-inflammatory drugs may be involved. In the unlikely event that this dies not solve it, surgery may be an alternative.

3. Osteoarthritis: although this is a degenerative condition, it sounds a lot worse than it is. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medicine, muscle relaxants, together with exercises to help support the spine. In 75% of cases, this approach will succeed.

4. Spinal stenosis: initially treatment may focus on removing the source of the pain, be that walking, running, etc. Ultimately, surgery may be necessary, and the success rate is high resulting in an increase in mobility and activity level.

Micro Lumbar Discectomy (MLD) Spine Surgery

Since the initial description of a herniated intervertebral disc as the cause of sciatica (pain radiating down the back of the leg) in 1934, the operation to relieve this pain has undergone considerable refinement. Compression of a nerve root in the low back causes pain in the leg, back pain and sometimes dysfunction of the nerve. Usually pain begins in the low back, then radiates into the leg with tingling numbness and weakness in the leg. The cause is herniation or bulging of softened intervertebral disk material into the spinal canal compressing the overlying nerve root. In older individuals, an over-growth of bone (osteophytes) may compress the nerve. Diagnosis is dependent upon the history of pain, physical examination of the patient, and

Anatomical changes seen with CT/MR imaging of the spine :

Pain the the back and extremity, usually the back of the leg

Pain and limitation of raising the leg with the patient lying on his back

Loss of sensation in the leg

Weakness in specific muscle groups in the leg

Loss of reflexes at the knee and ankle

CT/MR images showing compression of a nerve root by disc material or osteophyte

Case History : Herniated lumbar disc with sciatica, pain and numbness

PS is a 30 year old housewife and mother who had experienced recurring episodes of low back pain for the past 10 years. This pain was progressively more severe for the past two years. A month before admission to the hospital she awoke with excruciating low back pain, and pain with numbness down the back of her right leg. She complained of weakness in the leg and the weakness progressed although the pain had improved.

Examination demonstrated pain when the right leg was passively elevated. There was weakness in the muscles which flexed up the foot at the ankle, numbness to pin prick over the top of the foot. The reflexes at the knee and ankle were normal.

A MRI image demonstrated a very large herniated disc fragment compressing the right L5 nerve root. A microlumbar discectomy was performed because of the failure of conservative treatment and the presence of severe pain and weakness. She left the hospital the same day and enjoyed immediate, near complete relief of sciatic pain.

The weakness is greatly improved, but the numbness persists. Comment: The L5 nerve root is usually the root compressed by a fragment of disc material which prolapses from the disc space between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae. The nerve root controls the muscles of elevation of the foot at the ankle, elevation of the big toe, sensation on the top of the foot…

If you are having lower back pain, you should look into VAX-D treatment. This is a way to help your back pain without paying for or risking surgery. A full VAX-D treatment lasts for just under one hour, is delivered by a certified physical therapist, physical therapist assistant, or VAX-D technician supervised by a physical therapist and involves a table and a computer. During a treatment, you wear a pelvic girdle, and lay on the VAX-D table. The girdle attaches at the foot of the table, and you hold on to handles at the head of the table. Although it sounds medieval, it is in fact very helpful.

You should know that during a treatment you experience a strong, not painful, stretch of your lumbar spine. The stretch lasts for a minute; then you rest for a minute; then a stretch for a minute, and cycles like that, pull/rest, pull/rest, for about a half an hour. During treatment, intradiscal pressures reduce to negative levels in the range of –100 to –150 mm Hg. The significantly lowered intradiscal pressure creates something like suction within the disc, which then pulls the hernia or bulge back into the disc. This can be painful.

Additionally, it is helpful to know that this suction also pulls fluid and nutrient cells into the disc which help to the disc and enables it to heal. VAX-D stands for vertebral axial decompression. It is a non-surgical, non-invasive, spinal decompression, medical treatment for a number of low back disc conditions, including herniated, bulging, ruptured discs, degenerative disc disease, annular tears, sciatica, internal disc disruption, and scar tissue. It is helpful to know as well, that VAX D was invented by Allan Dyer, M.D., Ph D and former Minister of Health in Ontario Canada.

Additionally, Dr. Dyer did the pioneering research that led to the creation of the ventricular defibrillator used to get a heart that has stopped to beat again. It is good to know that there have been fifteen publications on VAX-D. Eight are studies published in juried medical journals. All report that VAX-D was effective for about eighty percent of the patients treated, and the most recent study reports an eighty eight percent success rate. In most cases, chronic low back conditions are resolved within about thirty treatments. No other non-surgical procedure has been demonstrated to have this level of effectiveness.

Ever since 1989, VAX-D has been registered as a non-experimental, medical procedure by the Division of Surgical and Rehabilitative Medicine of the FDA. Its 510K registration is for decompression of the vertebral discs and facet joints. Keep in mind that VAX-D is a new medical procedure and the therapy has worked for many patients worldwide, are now being treated.

Also, awareness of VAX-D is growing rapidly as physicians and healthcare providers learn about it and the phenomenal results it has achieved. Consequently, VAX-D is now becoming the standard of care for chronic low back pain.

Is your sciatica pain common to herniated disc? If so, how do you get pain relief now?

There certainly are a lot of different things that can go wrong with our backs. One of the worst problems that we can have, however, is if we have a herniated disc, especially if it is irritating the sciatic nerve. A herniated disc occurs whenever the padding that exists between the individual vertebrae begins to break down and eventually ruptures or protrudes. This can cause enough pain on its own but there are times whenever the bulging material will press against the sciatic nerve, either pinching it or irritating it in some way or another. This can cause a lot of suffering for the individual that has these kinds of problems.

You might be interested to know that there is some controversy over exactly what is going wrong in this particular case. Some doctors will refer to it as a ruptured disc while others may refer to it as a torn disc or perhaps even disc disease. Regardless of what they are calling it, however, you are probably interested in what can be done in order to alleviate some of the symptoms that you are experiencing. Although this will have a lot to do with the different diagnosis that you get, there are some things that can be done in order to take some of the pressure off of the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve that exists in the body. Starting in the lower back, it runs through the area of the buttox and then down into the legs. Since it is such a large nerve and covers a lot of ground inside of your body, there are a lot of opportunities for things to go wrong with it. Typically, the pain will occur because of problems that are experienced in the lower back. If this nerve is pinched or irritated in some way, perhaps through a herniated disc, the pain may be localized or it may even travel down into your legs. In order for you to get rid of the pain that you are experiencing, you need to remove the pressure from the sciatic nerve.

One thing that you may be told to do is to use hot and cold treatments on this area of your back. This is a very common thing whenever it comes to herniated discs and they can actually help to ease some of the pain by reducing swelling. In the case of sciatica pain and a herniated disc, however, more may be needed in order for you to totally overcome the problem.

There are several types of physical therapy that you may have to go through in order to overcome the pain. Typically, this is accomplished through stretching and at times strengthening exercises that are done in the presence of a qualified physical therapist. There are also some specific exercises that you may be able to do at home in order to help speed along your recovery process.

Sciatica pain is something you won’t want to live with for an extended length of time. Effective treatment is available now that will ease your sciatica pain sooner than you might think.
